Compass College of Cinematic Arts is an advanced school offering an accelerated film program in a unique, conservatory-like environment. Through high-end training and a special mentoring process, young artists – future writers, designers, producers, directors, and executives – bring forth a distinctly creative and technical skill set, a strong work ethic, and a Christ-centeredness that fosters entrepreneurial success and serves as an asset on film/television shoots and in executive studio and corporate settings.
Compass College of Cinematic Arts originated as a production company under the name Compass Arts, a ministry that provided an integral voice in the public square. By producing broadcast campaigns, television specials, short films, and docudramas, the production team garnered 32 National Telly Awards and one Clio Award.
In 2000, the production team began teaching their skills to the next generation of media leaders, incorporating their successes by the process of vocational calling and authentic discipline.
Six years later, as a full-fledged film school, Compass launched an intensive film program that was designed to provide outstanding academic excellence in media arts. The sixty-credit, fourteen-month program, which is strongly integrated and wonderfully “hands on,” continues to be taught by industry professionals and educational leaders who have excelled in their disciplines.
Compass earned its accreditation in 2009 from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), becoming the first film school in Michigan to hold this prestigious endorsement. In early 2011, the school received its approval from the Michigan Department of Education to become a college, and now awards Associates of Applied Science degrees in Film and Media Production.
Graduates of the college go on to work in various areas of the entertainment industry, including productions for major feature films and episodic television programs and for top media companies. Some also embrace their entrepreneurial skills by forming independent production companies or by joining marketing departments and agencies to serve corporations, small businesses and churches in meeting their visual and digital marketing needs.
Since the school’s inception, a strong Board of Directors has provided insight, business acumen and oversight, which has led to the increase of staff and students and extended community reach. Their generational and entrepreneurial vision has guided Compass in producing a culture of artists who are lead by God and determined to make a positive difference with their talent. Additionally, curriculum oversight is provided by an Advisory Board of New York and Hollywood A-list talent and top educational leaders.
